Description

In the early 1840s, French psychiatrist Moreau began studying the therapeutic applications of hashish and became a key figure at the Club des Hachichins, led by author Gautier. Surgeon and republican socialist Lallemand wrote the first European work using hashish as a plot device. The book, supposedly translated from an Arabic manuscript found in the author’s cabin, blends sensational and doctrinal elements, suggesting hashish provides both present consolation and future insights.

This copy is inscribed by Lallemand to “Monsieur Breton” with a distinctive flourish. The book saw some success and was republished in 1848 with the additional title “Révolutions Politiques et Sociales.”
